Evan read Politics, Philosophy and Economics at St John's College, Oxford where he was editor of the student newspaper, Cherwell. He then went to Harvard where he obtained a Masters Degree in Public Administration. Before becoming a broadcaster Evan worked as an economist for the Institute for Fiscal Studies and the London Business School's Centre for Business Strategy. Evan joined the BBC in 1993 as an economics correspondent for BBC radio and daily TV news programmes. He contributed to a range of news and current affairs programmes from The Money Programme to Radio 1's Newsbeat. In 1997 Evan became the Economics Editor for Newsnight and in 2001 he became the BBC's Economics Editor. His book, Public Spending, was also published in 1998 and he is co-author of the Penguin Dictionary of Economics and the New Penguin Dictionary of Business. He writes papers and reports for the Social Market Foundation and acts as its Company Secretary. Awards he has won include the Industrial Society Award for Broadcast Journalist of the Year in 1998 and the Work Foundation's Workworld Broadcast Journalist of the Year in 2001 and 2003. He has also won Best Broadcast Submission at the Business Journalist of the Year Awards for Big, Bad Business on Radio 4 and the Harold Wincott Foundation's Business Broadcaster of the Year.
